"...it is impossible to foretell definitely just what civilization will be twenty years from now. Hence it is impossible to prepare the child for any precise set of conditions. To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities" John Dewey. My Pedagogic Creed (1897)
"Nobody has a clue, despite all the expertise that's been on parade for the past four days, what the world will look like in five years' time. And yet we're meant to be educating them for it." Sor Ken Robinson. TED Talk, 2006.
Over 100 years apart, Dewey and Robinson see education as a process that touches the future (the only difference being the acceleration of change and unpredictability in that span of time).
The Preparing Future Faculty community is committed to this charge that we care about good work in teaching because we believe that our role as educators is not just to teach our subject but to lead minds and prepare students for their futures. The Preparing Future Faculty community is a nation-wide one, and growing as PFF programs engage graduate students who go on to work in diverse higher education settings.
At CGU, we are excited to be part of this effort. We have a unique PFF community as it includes not just those entering faculty life as professors, but also artists who will work in a variety of settings, MBA and EMBA students who work in corporate settings, and students from multiple disciplines who will enter careers outside of academia. We see teaching and leadership as having multiple points of congruence: teachers like leaders have vision, help others ignite their visions, are experts in their subject area, make strategic plans with goals and targets, engage stakeholders and motivate them to remain engaged through a process, and guide them toward achieving their vision. The PFF program at CGU nurtures strong leaders whether you work in a classroom, a studio, a boardroom, or in the community.
