International J-1 Students and Scholars International J-1 Students and Scholars

In order to be a J-1 Scholar at the Claremont Colleges, you must be invited by a department to conduct research or teach as a visiting professor. To be a J-1 Student at the Claremont Colleges, you must be sponsored by a government agency or participate in an approved exchange program.

Upon your invitation, please submit a J-1 Request for DS-2019 (form #I-12) and a copy of your passport page (and any dependents, if applicable). If your stay will not be financed by the Claremont Colleges, you will also need to submit proof of financial capability with your request form. Please feel free to initally scan and email these documents to the International Staff at international@cgu.edu

To have your visa documents shipped directly to you, please purchase a shipment label through UEMS Eship Global. CGU uses a convenient express mail services that will allow you to pay for and receive your documents through DHL, UPS or FedEx within 5-7 business days. THIS IS REQUIRED for all students and scholars who want their DS-2019 shipped. To set up an account, please visit UEMS Eship Global website. Once you receive your DS-2019 immigration form you may apply for your J-1 visa at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your home country. To find the closest US Embassy or Consulate office, in addition to the appointment wait time, please click here.

Upon arrival to the Claremont Colleges, please check in with the International Staff and bring the following items:

  1. Copy of your stamped DS-2019, passport (including the issuing page and/or the extension), visa, and I-94 card (small white card containing your admission number, both sides)
  2. The address and phone number at which you will be staying while studying at CGU.
  3. A signed copy of the International Scholar Requirements for SEVIS (form #I-6).
  4. Proof of health insurance (for you and all of your dependents)
