What is a dissertation writing boot camp?

The dissertation writing boot camp is a writing retreat for graduate students who must balance their dissertation writing with the demands and responsibilities of home and work. The Boot Camps offer students a quiet space to write with no distractions or interruptions. The Writing Center provides a light breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and individual spaces for focused writing.

The Boot Camp process develops writers' ability to set effective goals or writing intentions and to track and understand their writing process. In addition to providing a dedicated space for a weekend of writing, the boot camp process helps students find sustainable writing habits that move their work forward. In addition, we become a community of writers committed to completing our dissertations on schedule, supporting and cheering each other on, and sharing strategies and experiences to help each other navigate the dissertation process with our sanity intact!

The Dissertation Boot Camps are open to students who are ABD (have been advanced to candidacy). Students in the dissertation proposal stage and students working on Master's theses can apply, but preference will be given to ABD students.

"We provide the coffee, tea, snacks, lunch, and stretch breaks. You do the writing!

Weekend Boot Camps

When is it?
The second weekend of the month, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Where is it?
The Student Success Center, 131 E 10th St.

Can I come?
Current CGU students who are ABD are eligible to attend the weekend boot camps. Space is limited and application review is generally first-come, first served — but we do consider other factors to ensure that as many students as possible can participate. Proposal and Master's thesis students will be considered after all ABD students' applications have been reviewed.

How do I sign up?
Once the announcement for each month's Boot Camp goes out, Complete the form here to apply for a space.

Please note: If you do not attend all of the boot camp, including writing sessions and lunches, a $50 charge will be applied to your student account.

Week-Long Boot Camp: Summer 2017

How is it different from the weekend boot camp?
Along with meeting for a whole week, rather than a weekend, Summer Dissertation Boot Camp participants benefit from a number of other features, including guest faculty and peer speakers addressing issues such as the writing process and staying motivated, as well as group discussions, over 35 hours of quiet writing time and a reward for your effort.

Can I come?
Like the weekend Boot Camp, there is an application process for the week-long Boot Camp, but it requires submission of a detailed work plan and confirmation from your advisor that you have discussed your plan with them. Only current CGU students who are ABD may apply. Proposal and Master's thesis students are not eligible for this camp.

How do I apply?

  1. Eligible students must submit an application which includes a brief statement on how you hope to benefit from the Boot Camp and a detailed Writing Plan for the week.
  2. You should discuss your proposed writing goals with your dissertation advisor.
  3. Your advisor must email the Writing Center (writing.center@cgu.edu) to confirm that s/he has discussed your writing plan with you. Your application will not be considered complete until we receive confirmation from your advisor.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. If you are accepted to the week-long Boot Camp and you fail to attend any part of it, a fee of $100 will be charged to your student account.
