We provide 1 free consultation per week, either in-person, online, or via email submission, for all CGU students, faculty, and staff.

In-Person Consulting

Meet at the Writing Center with one of our Writing Consultants for a 50-minute session. We believe that any writer, even a professional, can benefit from sharing drafts with a colleague. Although we won't edit your paper or guarantee you an "A," we will help you with the entire writing process, from brainstorming ideas for your paper, clarifying and organizing ideas, to polishing your style. Our goal is not just to improve your paper, but to make you a better writer who is more capable of crafting and editing his or her own work.

Online Videoconferences

If you can't come into the Writing Center in person, we now offer 50-minute online sessions with our Writing Consultants. Using the same scheduler to make an appointment, you can meet at the time of your appointment in a whiteboard space, where you can upload your document, view revisions, and chat via text, audio, or video.
 
If you want to make an online appointment, be sure to select a Consultant who is available for online tutoring, and select "Yes - Meet Online" in the appointment window. Just before the start of your appointment, return to the schedule and click on your appointment; in the window that appears, click "Start or Join Online Consultation." Your Writing Consultant will meet you in the whiteboard space that appears.

Email Submission

Submit your paper through our scheduler and receive comments from a Consultant via email. This service is particularly helpful for addressing global organizational and structural concerns in your paper; it is less helpful for sentence-by-sentence suggestions. Our Consultants will not copyedit your work for you, but they will point out recurring stylistic and grammatical issues and offer advice on how to fix them.

Papers up to 15 (double-spaced, 1 column, 12-point type, 1-inch margins) pages take up to 3 business days. Papers between 16-50 (double-spaced, 1 column, 12-point type, 1-inch margins) pages take 7 business days. We do not accept papers longer than 50 pages.

Once you are logged into our online scheduling system, simply select from the menu at the top the calendar called "Email Review." Make an "appointment" with the Consultant of your choice. The time does not matter; it is solely a placeholder used for administrative purposes.

We also provide free workshops through the semester, dissertation writing support, as well as special class presentations on request. In addition, the Writing Center has a Resource Library of books and handouts.

Workshops

Each semester, we offer a number of free workshops of general interest to all members of the CGU community. Popular topics have included "Presenting Conference Papers," "Preparing for Qualifying Examinations," "Writing Graduate Research Papers," "Overcoming Writer's Block," and "Writing Book Reviews & Literature Surveys."

Dissertation Boot Camp

The Writing Center facilitates Dissertation Boot Camps on the second weekend of every month during the regular academi year. At Boot Camp, dissertation writers commit all day Saturday and Sunday to focus on writing (no phones, no internet, no distractions). We discuss strategies for setting realistic objectives, staying focused, and overcoming writer's block. Coffee, tea, snacks, lunch, and a large dose of motivation provided.

You can sign up for Boot Camp approximately two weeks before the date listed on our calendar via this registration form. Boot Camp is free, but if you are accepted to attend and fail to show up for any portion of the camp, including lunchtime discussions, a $50 fee will be charged to your student account.

Resource Library & Free Handouts

The Writing Center houses books and handouts on all aspects of the writing process, from developing a topic to proofreading. We also have style manuals, academic writing texts, and books on writing in the disciplines.

All students are welcome to stop by our house at 141 E. 12th Street to use the Resource Library. To ensure that a staff member will be present at the Center, email us to schedule an appointment.

How to Set Up An Online Appointment How to Set Up An Online Appointment

 Living away from campus? Meet with a Writing Consultant online.

Step 1

Make an appointment on our online scheduler. Be sure to select a Consultant who is available for online consultation, as indicated by the words "Online appts. only" or "Face to face and online" below their name.

Step 2

When making an appointment, be sure to select "Yes - Meet Online" in the pop-up window. Save your appointment.

Step 3

At the time of your appointment, log into our scheduler again and click on the yellow square for your appointment. In the appointment window that appears, click the red "Start or Join Online Consultation."

Step 4

You will be taken to a virtual whiteboard space. Your Consultant will meet you there, as indicated by the "2" in the upper right hand corner (for 2 users in the room).

Step 5

You can paste your paper into the whiteboard space, or you can upload it using the Import/Export button (two arrows facing opposite directions) in the upper right corner. You can text chat with your client, or if you would like to use audio/video chat, click on the grey panel on the left side of your screen. You will be asked to allow your web browser to access your camera and microphone. Click "Allow," "Yes," or something similar, depending on your browser.

Step 6

Your Consultant can show you other tools that you can use during your session, like drawing, highlighting, and viewing your revision history. At the end of your session, be sure to download your revised paper using the Import/Export tool again.
